We road tripped out to La Push this weekend to do some salmon habitat photo work for the Wild Salmon Center, and holy cow we couldn't have picked a prettier weekend to be exploring.

Ferry traffic from Edmonds to Kingston was insane, so we headed the longer way up through Mukilteo and Port Townsend, which means 2 ferry crossings instead of 1, but larger loading areas and prettier waiting spots for both crossings, rather than sitting on the highway near Edmonds. While we waited an hour for our second ferry, we had a bit of time to explore around Fort Casey. It's been on my list of places to check out for a while now, but it's always seemed like too far to drive for not that much hiking.

If you're looking for strenuous hiking and a workout, I wouldn't recommend it, but if you're looking for a gorgeous spot for a picnic and a romp in some wildflowers... this is definitely the place. Lots of cool fort buildings to explore, we ran out of time before we could see the whole area, but I would definitely come back here with visitors who want views without a hike.
